The Berg
from the historical point of view |
|
|
 |
Every year around Pentecost, Alumni of the
university and former citizens of Erlangen return seeking
comfort and security in Erlangen. At this time of year
the Bergkirchweih takes place, the most enormous
and enjoyable beer festival in the northern part of
Bavaria. In the shade of numerous trees people from the
area as well as from abroad, meet to celebrate and taste
the beer which is especially brewed for this occasion. |
|
In the 19th century Erlangen was famous for
its beer which was called 'Erlanger' and exported
it even to Sweden and the United States. The beer export
experienced a great decline as a consequences of World
War I, but the fame of the tasty brew of hop and barley
has never been forgotten. Even today Erlangen's two large
breweries, Kitzmann and Steinbach make use of the
well known taste of their beer which was appreciated
world-wide by famous persons such as the author Karl May. |
