Today the Bergkirchweih is no longer related to a shooting match. Since 1911 the Erlanger Privilegierte Schützengesellschaft (a marksmen's association in Erlangen) has marched in an annual parade to the Waldschießhaus (the marksmen's clubhouse). Today the old Schießhaus (the marksmen's clubhouse at the Burgberg) from 1729 no longer exists and was rebuilt years ago. What remains, however, are the large number of visitors who come to see the Berg at the 'fifth season', as the days of Erlangen's Bergkirchweih are often called.
While in former times people used to bring their food and tableware from home and only bought the beer at the Berg, the festival now offers a great deal of food and service. You can get anything from the typical Franconian specialities such as Bratwurst or Wedelkarpfen (a smoked herring) over Yugoslavian Shashlik, to Turkish Döner. What really plays a big role today are the rides and attractions of the showmen, especially the Ferris wheel. Sparkasse Erlangen
