The Hofbräu Keller
For several
decades Irmgard Steinmüller has been the owner of this
cellar, and has become a kind of symbolic figure.
Originally the cellar used to belong to a brewery in the
very eastern part of Erlangen. The brewery was founded in
1729 and was located between Bohlenplatz 6 and
Universitätsstraße (now a Greek restaurant). Before
World War I its management was in the hands of Messrs.
Erlwein und Schultheiß and was then in 1919 taken over
by Hofbräu AG Bamberg und Erlangen. After the fire in
1936 the brewing techniques were no longer renewed and
the buildings were only used as establishment up until
they were sold to the university and torn down in 1955. |
